Derrick Pickering
Nurse Practitioner
When it comes to delivering compassionate and comprehensive patient care, Derrick Pickering, FNP C, CNM, is recognized for his steady dedication and professionalism. His journey in the medical field, particularly in women’s health, has been shaped by both personal experience and a consistent pursuit of excellence. His story reflects not only meaningful professional milestones but also resilience in the face of personal challenges, which have helped him become a thoughtful and empathetic healthcare provider.
Early Inspiration and Professional Beginnings
Born in Utah, Derrick developed an early interest in healthcare after facing illness as a child. The nurses who cared for him left a lasting impression through their kindness and support. That experience inspired him to pursue nursing to serve others with the same level of compassion. His early motivation laid the groundwork for a career focused on patient-centered care and long-term relationships.
Academic Excellence and Specialization
His academic path demonstrates a strong commitment to excellence. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brigham Young University Idaho with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and earned a GPA of 3.92. He later completed a Master of Science as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Brigham Young University, Provo, graduating with a GPA of 3.9 in August 2014. These achievements reflect both discipline and a desire to build a solid clinical foundation.
While completing his training as a family nurse practitioner, Pickering worked in pediatrics for nearly five years. His time caring for children deepened his understanding of illness from both clinical and personal perspectives. Supporting young patients and their families strengthened his resolve to provide attentive and respectful care. Those years also reinforced the empathy he developed from his own childhood health challenges.
His personal life significantly influenced his professional direction. Experiences with infertility, infant loss, and pregnancy complications within his family sparked a deeper interest in women’s health. These events guided him toward advanced training, and in May 2022, he earned a postgraduate certificate as a Certified Nurse-Midwife from Frontier Nursing University. This additional specialization expanded his ability to serve women across different stages of life.
Professional Milestones and Accomplishments
Throughout his career, Derrick has achieved meaningful milestones that highlight his dedication to women’s health and family care. He is dual board-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Nurse Midwife. This dual certification allows him to provide comprehensive services that address both primary care and specialized reproductive health needs.
Since March 2021, he has served as a Certified Nurse Midwife and Nurse Practitioner at Sunrise Women’s Health in Mapleton, UT. In this role, he founded a clinic where he provides comprehensive healthcare services to women of all ages. His evidence-based approach supports high-quality care in primary care, hormone replacement therapy, help with menopause, gynecological services, infertility, midwifery, contraception, and lab assessments. Derrick Pickering emphasizes listening carefully to patients, understanding their goals, and engaging in shared decision-making to help them achieve the outcomes they seek.
Earlier in his career, Pickering gained valuable clinical experience as a Student Nurse Midwife at Wellsprings Women’s Care in Tooele, UT, and Bella Women’s Care in Phoenix, AZ. In these settings, he performed obstetric and gynecological exams, assisted with labor management and births, and provided postpartum care under experienced supervision. These opportunities strengthened his clinical skills and prepared him for independent practice.
Commitment to Education and Community
He remains committed to professional growth and community involvement. In 2019, he presented on “The Effectiveness of Psychopharmacotherapy” at the UVU Conference on Suicide Prevention. By contributing to professional discussions, he supports continued learning within the medical community and promotes evidence-based practice.
Personal Life and Interests
Outside of clinical work, Pickering is a devoted husband and father. He has been married to Stephanie Pickering for over 17 years, and together they have three children living, including one with special needs. They also experienced the loss of twins who were born prematurely and passed away. These deeply personal experiences have strengthened his empathy and reinforced his dedication to supporting families during vulnerable times.
In his personal time, he enjoys scuba diving, vacationing, and spending meaningful time with his family. Outdoor activities such as camping and hiking provide balance and renewal. These interests reflect his appreciation for connection, resilience, and perspective.
Derrick Pickering’s journey reflects a thoughtful blend of personal growth and professional achievement. His dedication to women’s health, dual board certification, and patient-centered philosophy define his approach to care. He continues to serve his community with humility, clinical expertise, and a genuine commitment to improving his patients' lives.
